Description
Chip Lord and Doug Michels, both architects, along with Hudson Marquez, an art student at Tulane University in New Orleans, came together to form Ant Farm in 1972. The group's objective was to explore an unconventional approach to architecture that challenged the conventional corporate ways of doing things.
According to Lord, they were given a list of eccentric millionaires in San Francisco, among whom was Stanley Marsh 3 of Amarillo, whom they approached for funding of one of their projects. Marsh's response began "It's going to take me awhile to get used to the idea of the Cadillac Ranch. I'll answer you by April Fool's Day. It's such an irrelevant and silly proposition that I want to give it all my time and attention so I can make a casual judgment of it."
