Description
In Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes," carousels and merry-go-rounds are used in a remarkable way. The two young protagonists, Will and Jim, turn down an invitation from the carnival's ominous owners to ride the carousel. Later, while hiding in the reeds, they witness Mr. Cooger take a ride on the carousel. It becomes apparent to Will that the carousel's music, Chopin's "Funeral March," is being played in reverse and that the carousel itself is moving backward. The boys are amazed as they watch Mr. Cooger grow younger with each backward revolution of the ride. In just moments, Cooger's age changes from forty years old to twelve years old. The carousel's rider is moving away from his funeral, rather than towards it.
