Description
In 1869, Major John Wesley Powell led the first expedition to explore the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon. With nine men, four boats and food for 10 months, he set out from Green River, Wyoming on May 24. Passing through (or portaging around) a series of dangerous rapids, the group passed down the Green River to its junction with the Colorado River (near present-day Moab, Utah) and completed the hard fought journey through the Grand Canyon on August 13, 1869. In 1871 Powell first used the term "Grand Canyon"; previously it had been called the "Big Canyon."
"The wonders of the Grand Canyon cannot be adequately represented in symbols of speech, nor by speech itself. The resources of the graphic art are taxed beyond their powers in attempting to portray its features. Language and illustration combined must fail. The elements that untie to make the Grand Canyon the most sublime spectacle in nature are multifarious and exceedingly diverse,"
~ John Wesley Powell, geologist
We almost did not make it into the Park because of the snow storm which had closed the roads the day before. Only the South Rim is open in the winter. I was thrilled to capture this view from the South Rim near Yavapai Point January 2017.
