Description
Day of the Dead involves visiting cemeteries to celebrate loved ones who have passed away. People paint their faces like skulls, build altars, and decorate them with marigolds, candles, and memorabilia. Unlike Halloween, the skulls in Dia de los Muertos are not meant to be scary. Aztecs believed death was a continuation of life and not something to fear.
There are companion pieces in my Religious Images gallery. They were all taken on Olvera Street in Los Angeles, California. One of the merchants had these figures displayed for sale in his window.
