Description
The day before, the park warned visitors not to come, as a massive winter storm and extremely cold temperatures, along with closed roads, made it uninviting. We tried to find a different adventure for our trip back to California from the Midwest in late January 2017. As we got closer, we decided that the roads had cleared enough that we should check it out. And are we glad!! It got down to 2 degrees (F) during the night, and was only 19 degrees (F) in midday when I took this photo along the South Rim near the visitors center. Altitude is 7,000 feet.
The Grand Canyon is known for its visually overwhelming size and its intricate and colorful landscape. Geologically, it is significant because of the thick sequence of ancient rocks that are well preserved and exposed in the walls of the canyon. These rock layers record much of the early geologic history of the North American continent.

Terrific shot, Jenny! 19 is indeed quite cold - but it's worth it, isn't it?! :)

The Grand Canyon changes her image with the seasons. A beautiful and sometimes mysterious place.
