Description
Bolts are one of the most common elements used in construction and machine design. They hold everything together; from screws in electric toothbrushes to massive bolts that secure to concrete pillars holding up streetlight posts, like these. Yet, have you ever stopped to wonder where they actually came from? Me, neither.
Experts, (yes, there are nut and bolt experts) differ as to their origin. The threaded bolt dates back to the 15th century, but the unthreaded bolt goes way back to Roman times. Archimedes (287 BC–212 BC) developed the screw principle (thank you) and used it to construct devices to raise water. However, there are signs that a wooden water screw to irrigate land and remove bilge water from ships may have originated in Egypt way before Archimedes.
In the end, let's all thank the Industrial Revolution for speeding up the development of the wonderful nut and bolt, like a metal soldier at attention, never faltering.
