I spent an hour trying to identify a wildflower that was growing next to the railroad tracks in the Southern California desert. During my research, I was reminded that Los Angeles is not a desert, but rather a chaparral - a plant community that is primarily found in California and the Baja California Peninsula of Mexico. The chaparral is shaped by a Mediterranean climate that features mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers, as well as wildfires. The plants in the chaparral are summer-drought-tolerant and have hard evergreen leaves. Our wildfire troubles stem from human invasion, as these shrubland plants do best when wildfires wipe them out every once in a while. Due to our efforts to suppress fires, the plants grow rampant until there are so many that they finally win the battle.
I still don't know what this is.

I've returned to my roots in Kansas after spending 45 years in Los Angeles. My passion for photography has always been an essential part of me, and I never leave home without my camera. I believe it is the artist's vision that produces art, and I appreciate every method and technique utilized to achieve that vision. Occasionally, I use digital applications and artificial intelligence to produce my final vision. If you're interested in owning my art, FAA offers multiple ways to enjoy it, including...
