Description
The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California is an iconic and beautiful landmark. However, not many people know about its impact on the weather in the surrounding area. Temperatures can differ up to 20 degrees between one end of the bridge and the other, and the temperature difference between the surface and underside of the bridge is even greater. In the middle of summer, workers who are painting the underside can expect to have difficulty with their equipment freezing.
The bridge also alters the movement of fog. When fog hits the bridge, it can create an area of high pressure that forces the fog down to the ground, resulting in a thick blanket of fog.
