Artist's Description

Every year, in Independence Kansas, the streets close down near Halloween, for the annual Neewollah festival. Neewollah (Halloween spelled backwards) began in 1919 as an effort to provide positive activities for kids of all ages in place of the typical Halloween pranks that occurred in the community. In the beginning the events centered on parades, morning, afternoon, and night on October 31. The parades consisted mainly of decorated cars and carriages. Queens and princesses from area festivals rode in the parades, along with our own Queen Neelah who was selected based on votes bought at a penny each. The Great Depression and World War II interrupted the Neewollah celebration but in 1958 four businessmen revived and elaborated on the Neewollah theme bringing it back as a 3-day celebration.

About Jenny Revitz Soper

Jenny Revitz Soper

I've returned to my roots in Kansas after spending 45 years in Los Angeles. My passion for photography has always been an essential part of me, and I never leave home without my camera. I strive to capture the extraordinary in the ordinary, using clever juxtapositions, contradictions, bursts of color, and touches of whimsy. My photography is a true expression of how I perceive the world, staying authentic and genuine to myself. I believe it is the artist's vision that produces art, and I appreciate every method and technique utilized to achieve that vision. Occasionally, I use digital applications and artificial intelligence to produce my final vision. If you're interested in owning my art, FAA offers multiple ways to enjoy it, including...
