Description
Riverside Park and Ralph Mitchell Zoo in Independence Kansas contains a historical Swan Pool enclosure built in the 1930s during the Great Depression. Along with the Pool, between 1930 and 1940, Monkey Island, the Zoo's stone steps, 3 park buildings, the stadium wall, and the wall surrounding the 86-acre cemetery were constructed through the efforts of the local townspeople by the Works Progress Administration (renamed in 1939 as the Work Projects Administration; WPA)
The WPA was the largest and most ambitious American New Deal agency, employing millions of unemployed people (mostly unskilled men) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads.
These two lovebirds (pun intended) make their home there. The bigger one may be an Ancona duck. Photographed summer 2016.
