Description
Carousel was originally a game played by Arabian and Turkish horsemen in the 12th century, involving a clay ball filled with perfume. The French developed their own equestrian competition and used the word "carousel". A device was created to prepare for these competitions featuring wooden horses suspended from a rotating pole. Carousels were later built specifically for entertainment and by 1861, the first steam-powered carousel was introduced, leading to the golden era of carousels from the late 1800s until the Great Depression.
