Description

This set of phone booths still stands in the iconic Los Angeles restaurant, Philippe The Original, located near Union Station, Chinatown, and Olvera Street. I used these booths as a makeshift office while out and about for work, needing a quiet place to return calls. Philippe's used to have the cheapest coffee in the nation, priced at ten cents (it was five cents until 1977), but it costs 45 cents today.

Philippe The Original is one of the oldest and most well-known restaurants in Southern California. It was founded in 1908 by Philippe Mathieu, who is credited with inventing the "French Dipped Sandwich." One day in 1918, while preparing a sandwich, Mathieu mistakenly dropped the sliced French roll into the pan of hot juice from the oven. The customer, a police officer, still wanted the sandwich and returned the next day with some friends, requesting more dipped sandwiches. And so the "French Dipped Sandwich" was born. It is still unclear whether the sandwich is named after Mathieu's French heritage, the French roll used to make the sandwich or the officer's last name.
