Description
Fire safety became a concern in early 20th-century construction, and fire escapes were installed as emergency egress. In poorer areas, residents used fire escapes for sleeping. This inspired Cornell Woolrich's "The Boy Cried Murder" and was later featured in Hitchcock's "Rear Window" and Weegee's photography. The motif of fire escapes in film noir led to the balcony scene in "West Side Story."
