Description
The Dewlen - Spohnhauer Memorial Bridge is a four-span through arch over the Verdigris River on Old US 160 just east of Independence, Montgomery County, Kansas, still open to traffic on a paved frontage road. The bridge was built in 1926, but made obsolete by a new highway bridge in 1960. Also called the Verdigris Bridge, it was posted to the National Register of Historic Places on March 10, 1983.
The bridge was constructed in memory of WWI veterans O. Glenn Dewlen, killed Sept. 26, 1918 - Argonne Forest, Company "K" 137th Inf., 35th Division and Harry F. Spohnhauer, killed Nov. 2, 1918 - Meuse Argonne Offensive, Company "H" 353rd Inf., 89th Division.
