Description
Cadillac Ranch - Amarillo Texas USA, January 2017
Cadillac Ranch is an art installation that was originally situated in a wheat field. However, in 1997, it was moved 2 miles west to a cow pasture along Interstate 40. The reason for this relocation was to put it further from Amarillo's city limits. During the move, all the trash and clutter from the old site was also gathered and spread around the new location. The monument has remained the same since its erection, except for the fact that it keeps changing.
Although it's located on private land, the Cadillac Ranch is visible from the highway, and visitors are tacitly encouraged to visit it. There's a frontage road through an unlocked gate to access it. Additionally, visitors are now encouraged to write graffiti or spray-paint the vehicles, which have lost their original colors and are wildly decorated. A motel chain, Hampton Inn, once sponsored a public relations campaign to restore the vehicles to their original colors as part of Route 66 landmark restoration projects. However, the new paint jobs and a plaque commemorating the project lasted less than 24 hours without fresh graffiti.
You can see visitors and artists hanging off the cars leaving their imprint.
